This is a video of light moving across salt crystals. Through my art practice, I explore how inorganic materials shape past and present cultures and economies. For the past two years I have adopted salt as one of my main materials. Salt is a rich mineral. For salt, wars were fought, borders changed, and pilgrimages made. It is a symbol of purity and punishment; a preservative and a corrosive; essential for life and ruin. Presented here for the viewer are crystals grown on metal. As the viewer witnesses the salt in its process of corrosion, the salt's reflection in the sunlight serves as a metaphor for the growth and life it simultaneously provides.
